Do You Know Why Delicious Food Photos Make You Hungry?

delicious-looking pictures
Looking at a picture of a golden baked salmon or a dark chocolate mousse cake makes your mouth water. However, till now, you probably had no idea why that happens. Well, according to a new study, there is a reason why delicious food photos make you hungry. It is a well-known saying that a picture is worth ten thousand words but in this case, the truth is a little bit deeper.

1) The Pictures

Pictures clicked of delicious dishes, covered in gooey cream or vibrant sauce, set your mind drooling and you can’t wait to put them into your mouth. Most of the advertising industry works on this principle, if you know what we mean.

2) The Study

This study, conducted by the Max Planck researchers, has found that visual stimulation through delicious-looking food pictures forced the neurosecretory protein hormone ghrelin secretion into blood. What explains the story behind the study is the fact that gherlin in the blood is responsible for our eating behavior as well as food metabolism.

3) The Results

The study results indicate that environmental factors such as the pictures also affect our food consumption specifically. With respect to this, presence of images depicting delicious-looking food items around you can significantly alter your consumption levels. Scientists call it an impact on your physiological regulatory circuits, which are instrumental in maintaining your body’s energy status.

4) The Danger Delicious food

However, the “picture” is not all rosy. It is known that over-exposure to such images can put you at a risk of overeating as your mind will not be able to gauge the difference between what you should or shouldn’t eat. This is further explained with the help of the aforementioned study, wherein, concentration of gherlin in the body was measured. Scientists found that with exposure to the delicious-looking images, there was an excessive danger of over-consumption of food, which the body does not actually need.

Petra Schussler, one of the Max Planck Institute scientist, has this to say about the study, “The findings of our study demonstrate, for the first time, that the release of gherlin into the blood for the regulation of food consumption is also controlled by external factors. Our brain thereby processes these visual stimuli, and the physical processes that control our perception of appetite are triggered involuntarily. This mechanism could prompt us to eat a piece of cake just two hours after breakfast.”

It has already been proven that overeating is more of a psyhological issue  than physical one. The fact that dozens of cookery shows, including Top Chef, Nigella’s Kitchen, and more recently MasterChef India Season 2, being telecast on television channels worldwide are enjoying unprecedented success, is proof that this news holds some weight. The only thing you need to keep in mind is that this doesn’t add to your weight.
